Gallery 9.5 NAHA, a gallery space in Hotel Anteroom Naha, is holding an exhibition, "Beyond the Scene" by Satoshi Someya, a Kyoto-based lacquer artist, from December 18, 2022 (Sun) to February 12, 2023 (Sun). The exhibition is held in a gallery space with a view of the sea, allowing visitors to appreciate the changing emotions of the past, present, and future.
Satoshi Someya has been interpreting lacquer-related designs from his unique perspective and developing them into artworks.
The starting point for this exhibition is "Sansui Rokaku Jinbutsu Tsuikinwan," a piece of lacquerware owned by the Okinawa Prefectural Museum.
This large bowl, with a continental-style pattern copied using a technique unique to Okinawa, was also the lacquerware used as the motif for the 3¢ Ryukyu stamps during the U.S. military government.
If decoration functions as "reading material," it naturally has a place to be applied. But, unfortunately, the landscape of patterns may be drifting more by destination and eye than by historical fact.
This exhibition comprises new works using seascapes from Gallery 9.5 NAHA, a reworking of the Okinawa series, and the "Mishiki" series. A landscape of a single pattern drifts between the public and the personal, between “the here and the there.”
